Exquisite Post Wedding Tamil Matrimony Ceremonies
Sammandhi Mariyadhai – The exchange of gifts! The post wedding rituals in a Tamil wedding set about with the “Sammandhi Mariyadhai” where the bride’s family and the groom’s family exchange gifts with each other thus showing their love towards each other’s family. Post this ritual, the bride embarks on a journey to the groom’s house.
Grihapravesam – The bride entering the groom’s house, this Tamil Matrimony ritual marks the bride entering the groom’s house for the first time. The groom’s mother welcomes the bride by performing an “Aarthi” while the bride and groom stand at the doorstep of the groom’s house. The bride tips over a jar of rice and enters the groom’s house. She places her right foot first as it is considered auspicious.
Vilayadal – The fun games! The Vilayadal is a Tamil wedding ritual wherein the groom’s sister gifts the bride with meaningful presents. The bride and the groom then sit and enjoy wedding games with the relatives cheering them. To quote a game, the bride and the groom will continuously be rolling a coconut between them and when a person in the crowd counts up to three, the bride and the groom should quickly reach and grab the coconut. Usually the bride is allowed to use both the hands while the groom is allowed to use only one hand. Many other games similar to this are played in the vilayadal ritual to ease up the tension between the bride and the groom.
Bridal Night – The first night! The Bridal night in a Tamil marriage marks the bride and the groom getting ready in new clothes and the bride’s mother presents gifts for them including an idol of Lord Krishna which marks the culmination of the wedding. When the bride and the groom come out the next morning, the women of the house sing songs to welcome them.
Reception – The dais for wishes! A reception party is usually held a day or two after the Tamil Wedding facilitating guests to wish the bride and the groom. Friends and relatives from far and near come by, wish the newlyweds and shower their hearty blessings upon them. There is a scrumptious vegetarian feast served for dinner.
A Tamil Matrimony is colorful, funfilled, music filled and a grand affair. What make it so lively are the Tamil traditions that are passed down through generations and the amazing people who shower their love. So, if you haven’t been at a Tamil Wedding so far, it’s never too late, go for one and I give you my word, you will enjoy every moment of it!
